Did you know that you can rent a military, complete with infantry, armored vehicles, tanks, and air support? Sierra Leone payed $35m for one to stave off the RUF during their civil war.
Maybe a good mothers day present?
ugh. its 2:20 am, and I’m 6 pages into my war crimes & human rights final. Its taking so much longer than I had planned, but its actually pretty interesting. I’m writing about private military companies and the legal implications of their new prominence in military action. Its tough to find reputable information about a lot of things (especially involving US contracts) because of confidentiality issues. Tomorrow, I have to finish this, then get a jump on my Transition Economies paper, I think I’m going to write about Dutch Disease and the implication of commodity dependence as it applies to russia and brazil.
In more nerdy news, CSEC (Case Social Entrepreneurship Club) may have a new project! We’re thinking of partnering with Global Brigades to bring business consulting expertise to rural communities in Panama. It would mean major fundraising projects next year, lots of planning, and a spring-break or just post-graduation trip to Panama to implement our recommendations! I’m so excited, its finally something tangible to sink our teeth into. If that doesn’t take off, I’m thinking that we’ll go the financial education project route, and possibly partner with the organization my bro is involved with, Minds Matter, to host a financial literacy/lifeskills class to the Cleveland area. Its at least a start; and definitely a very doable project for next year.
Plus, after last year’s KATwalk success/madness I’m looking for something to do.
